PADI Advanced Open Water Diver

Take your diving to the next level.

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to build your experience, improve your skills and introduce you to new types of diving under the guidance of a PADI Instructor. You don't need to be "advanced" to start: you can begin right after earning your Open Water Diver certification.

What you'll learn

You'll refine the skills you gained in the Open Water Diver course and develop greater confidence, awareness and dive-management ability.

You'll focus in particular on underwater navigation and gain experience in deep diving, learning how to plan and manage dives at greater depths.

You'll also get to try other diving activities, choosing with your instructor the Adventure Dives that best match your interests and local conditions.

Course structure

  • Knowledge development: theory for the Adventure Dives in your programme, including PADI digital learning materials.
  • Deep Adventure Dive: one dive dedicated to the experience and procedures of deep diving.
  • Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive: one dive dedicated to refining underwater navigation techniques using natural references and a compass.
  • 3 elective Adventure Dives: you'll complete the course with three more experiences chosen from the Adventure Dives available and suited to local conditions — for example buoyancy, search and recovery, night diving, fish identification or other activities in the PADI programme.

The course includes 5 Adventure Dives in total and can usually be completed in a few days, depending on dive scheduling and environmental conditions.

Prerequisites

  • PADI Open Water Diver, PADI Junior Open Water Diver or a qualifying certification recognised by PADI.

What's next

A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver is trained to dive to a maximum depth of 30 metres, always within the limits of their training and experience. It's the prerequisite for Rescue Diver and for many specialties.
